An Architectural Jewel. The Freeborn Bank Building/Jacobsen Apartments is considered an arcitectural jewel because of its original terra cotta exterior. The City of Albert Lea, Minnesota is offering two connected buildings for historic redevelopment located in the Albert Lea Central Business District. The buildings are at the original 100% corner of this National Commercial Historic District. The buildings are located at the southeast corner of South Broadway Avenue and East William Street. They were constructed in the early 1920’s, are four stories in height, and share a common stairwell and elevator. The corner building “201” was constructed as the Freeborn National Bank and Medical Arts Center. The building is architecturally significant in the Historic District and essentially unchanged since its original construction. The bank occupied the first floor and the large ornate vault remains in generally good condition. The three upper floors were occupied by medical and professional offices and these were accessed from the main floor foyer entrance and common elevator. The building is post and beam construction. The elevator and stairwell are completely within this building. The adjacent building is also of ornate architecture and four floors in height. This building was identified as the Jacobsen Apartments. The three upper floors of “211” were nine apartments using the foyer entrance and common elevator. The first floor is a separate retail space. There are no current occupants in either building. This is wood frame construction. Originally these two buildings with their common features may have been an early example of a live/work
opportunity and may still be attractive in that use.
The City of Albert Lea is currently in the process of restoring the exterior, including tuckpointing the terra cotta, re-roofing the buildings and installing new windows.
